Sean Hawkins new SCCA Executive Director

Sean Hawkins was selected to the leadership role for the Second Chance Center for Animals in January, 2016 and we’ll welcome him to Flagstaff in February after an exhaustive national executive search. A longtime champion of innovative programs to provide free and low-cost veterinary care, including spaying and neutering to prevent dog and cat overpopulation, Sean started some of the first efforts to help animals on the Navajo, Hopi, Zuni, and Apache Nations, making him a perfect fit for Second Chance with its programs reaching across Northern Arizona.

Sean was hired by author and humanitarian Cleveland Amory in 1989 to establish dog and cat sterilization clinics for the Fund for Animals, where he pioneered the concept of mobile spay and neuter clinics across the United States. Under the Fund’s umbrella, he opened and served as administrator for the “largest spay and neuter clinic in the world” in Manhattan, in addition to facilities in Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Los Angeles and Albuquerque. Recognized as an international expert in developing non-surgical sterilization methods for animals, Sean has served as an advisor for the Alliance for Contraception in Cats and Dogs (ACC&D) and with Ark Sciences in the implementation of the revolutionary ZeuterinTM injection technology.

In 2008 Sean was courted by Cesar Millan to become the first executive director of the Cesar & Illusion Millan Foundation, the charity partner of the Emmy® nominated series National Geographic’s “Dog Whisperer” in Los Angeles, California. Leveraging Cesar’s celebrity, Sean helped to raise funds for and create the “Mutt-i-grees®” humane education curriculum with Yale University School of the 21st Century. The unique, hands-on curriculum utilizes lessons with animals in the classroom to teach empathy, respect, kindness, and humane choices.

Sean launched Unleashed Public Relations, a boutique public relations firm in Los Angeles, to create partnerships between celebrities and nonprofit organizations to advance social causes. Unleashed Public Relations was tapped for the roll-out of the Compassion Revolution for Katherine Heigl in collaboration with the Jason Debus Heigl Foundation to announce a $1 million gift for spay/neuter and supporting programs in the City and County of Los Angeles.

He is the creator for the smash hit Hero Dog Awards® which recognizes the powerful relationships between dogs and people. Sean brought the Hero Dog Awards® to the American Humane Association as that organization’s first, national signature event and sold the television broadcast rights to Hallmark Channel for three years. While serving as the executive producer of the Hero Dog Awards® one billion media impressions and more than six million Facebook page views were earned. More than 1.2 million Americans voted for their favorite dogs.

Most recently, Sean held the post of Vice President of Philanthropy & Marketing for the Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando, the oldest and largest animal welfare organization in Florida.

Sean is relocating from Orlando to Flagstaff with his two rescued dogs, Buddy and Mabel, both of whom have been given honorary positions at Second Chance. Mabel, a twelve-year-old mixed breed, will be looking for squirrels and chasing butterflies, while Buddy, an eleven-year-old Labrador, is joining the communications team.
