Steph Callahan joined the leadership team at Second Chance Center for Animals in February, 2017 as the Adoption and Retail Manager. This role is a new position for Second Chance, created to continue expanding the public’s awareness about adopting pets from shelters and to work with adopters to make the perfect match with a new pet. Her background as a certified professional dog trainer is not only a benefit to shelter pets but helps make sure every adopter has the tools they need to be successful in their new home.
Beginning her career in animal care as a receptionist and animal technician in a ten-doctor veterinary practice, Steph continued her education and became a dog trainer and behavior consultant. Most recently she was Shelter Manager for Great Dog Rescue New England in Massachusetts and still works for them part time from afar, as their Returns Coordinator and Behavior Consultant. In addition to graduating from Salem State University with a Bachelors in Psychology, she is a CPDT-KA certified dog trainer and has her certification through the AKC to test dogs for the Canine Good Citizen evaluation.
Open and clear communication with families seeking to adopt pets is important to Steph. “I could not be happier working in rescue,” Steph says. “I feel very lucky to be working at Second Chance. I know I can make a difference in the lives of animals and that I can help more people help more pets.” Steph is currently writing three different novels, which she says probably means none of them will ever be finished, and she can recite the alphabet backwards.
