Bartley and Gizzy's Incredible Journey

March 27, 2009

Bartley and Gizzy (short for Gizzmo) are a dynamic duo with an incredible survivor story. Their journey together began long before their time here at Second Chance Center for Animals in the town of Dilkon on the Navajo Reservation.

The pair spent their time roaming the town together, searching for a kind hand to feed them. They ate, slept and played together every day and found refuge behind the town’s grocery store, Basha’s. Bartley and Gizzy were fortunate to find a human companion in a local vendor, coined the Stew Lady. The Stew Lady shared her lunch with the dogs every time she came into town to sell her stew and even let them stay in her trailer with her whenever the weather was stirred up. Unfortunately, the Stew Lady passed away this past late fall.

Bartley took on the role of protecting Gizzy from the elements, guiding Gizzy to a culvert in the back of their grocery store and covering the opening with himself each evening to ensure a safe night for his companion. Harsh winter weather called for aid for both pooches. A local nurse practitioner, Nancy Honeychuck, knew of Bartley and Gizzy from her visits to the grocery store and the Stew Lady’s vendor stand. When winter weather began to move into the town, she decided to contact Second Chance Center for Animals to take the pooches into the shelter.

Bartley and Gizzy have had food in their bellies and a warm place to sleep at SCCA since November of 2008, but what these two really need is a human companion to take them into a permanent home like their Stew Lady did. The pair have been inseparable since they met in that little town and we hope to find them a forever family with the compassion to add these lifelong pals to their family. Please contact SCCA to meet these canine companions. Bartley and Gizzy will be adopted out on "the buddy system" two for the adoption fee of one.

Unable to adopt? Check out the SCCA website for information on more ways to help homeless pets, like volunteering, fostering or making a donation!
