Foster Volunteer Spotlight
SCCA needs resources beyond the walls of our center. Our foster volunteers provide just that and we are proud to present Lorina Lopez as our spotlight foster volunteer for the summer of 2009.
Lorina Lopez and her family were impressed by the programs and services SCCA offers Northern Arizona. With a busy family and modest income, Lorina did not have the resources to donate monetarily to SCCA so she began contributing by opening her home as a foster parent to animals in need. SCCA often takes in companion animals that need short-term recuperative care or an interim place to stay outside of the shelter environment. Lorina and her family give these animals the one-on-one special care needed and show them what family life is all about.
Lorina works full time during the day, but her favorite job is fostering. “It’s a very rewarding job. Sometimes I think I get more out of it than they do. When I get an animal in that has been rescued out of poverty, abuse or abandonment and I look into their eyes they say “don’t feel sorry for me; just help me to move forward back into balance again.” Animals do not worry about the past, they are always looking to the future and are ALWAYS optimistic. “If only we could be more like our dogs or cats. We wouldn’t worry about how our house compares to others, or if our coat is shinier than everyone else’s. We would focus more on what is really important; having a happy and balanced family, wagging our tails with ALL of our neighbors, and sharing a good belly rub whenever we could. It helps things stay in perspective when you look at life through animals’ eyes,” says Lorina.
Lorina has been a dedicated foster volunteer at SCCA for four years now. She has helped SCCA save over 25 animals and recently took in a mama Great Dane with a litter of 10 Great Dane puppies, some with special needs due to irresponsible breeding. Aside from being a hero to the staff and animals at SCCA, Lorina is the Northland Director for Desert Hills Heelers and foster mom for them as well. Be a hero. Save a life! Imagine the reward you will receive knowing you have played a special role in saving an animal’s life!
