Adoption Procedures

Meet and Greet all dogs in the household.  Our shelter offers several “get acquainted” rooms where prospective adopters can get to know our animals. If you already have a canine companion, we require you to bring him or her along for a “meet and greet,” and so our adoption counselors can ensure compatibility.

Meet and Greet all family members under age 10.  To be sure your new pet is right for your household, we ask that all family members come by for a visit.  At the very least, we would like to talk to all adult members of the household.

Please bring the following with you:

  • photo ID (adopters must be 18 or older)
  • rental agreement

Other things to consider:

  • Large dogs should have a fenced yard.
  • Think about the dog breed before adopting one to live in an apartment.
  • Cats live longer lives if they live indoors.
  • Declawing cats can be very painful.  Contact your veterinarian for more information.
  • The city of Flagstaff has a leash law.
  • All dogs should be leashed while on hiking trails.

Our adoption counselors are trained to help you find the best match for your lifestyle and all members of the household.  Please don't hesitate to ask for help in your decision!  If we don't know the answer, we'll find someone who does.
