Service Learning Projects

As a non-profit organization we rely on the efforts of many people who generously give of their time because they care about the welfare of animals.  To help you help us, this information will give you what you need to successfully complete your service learning project.

  • Select a project from the list below.
  • Keep track of the time you devote to your project on a time sheet.
  • When you have finished your project, bring your project description and time sheet to SCCA for a staff member to sign off on.

That’s it!  Good luck with your project!

Project Ideas:

  • Collect things you have around the house and bring them to the shelter: blankets for the dogs to lie on at night (must be washable); towels; used, but still usable dog collars and leashes (no choke collars or extendable leashes, please).
  • Organize and hold a family or neighborhood garage sale and donate the proceeds to the shelter.
  • Start a supply drive in your school or neighborhood, or approach businesses to donate: hard chew toys for dogs; dog and cat food; canned dog and cat food; heating pads; baby bottles; Kitten Milk Replacer and Puppy Milk Replacer, (both can be purchased at Petsmart); dog and cat treats (no rawhide chews).
  • Organize and hold a bake sale at your school and donate the proceeds to Second Chance.  Sell homemade dog cookies, too!
  • Choose a member or two of our “Lonely Hearts Club” to learn about and to make and place posters for around Flagstaff.
  • Write letters to the editors of area newspapers about an animal welfare issue you have researched and care about.
  • Start a coin drive at your school to help us pay for food and medical supplies.
  • Invite our humane educator to make a presentation to your class. You can coordinate the visit and participate in the presentation.
  • Work with our humane educator to create an educational display at your school.  Responsible pet ownership, pet overpopulation, pet health and safety, and recognizing animal abuse, are examples of topics for the display.
  • Have a pizza/video party and have your friends bring something for the animals as the “price of admission”.
  • The next time you have a birthday party, ask your friends to bring a gift for the animals instead of for you.  Your gift will be the joy of bringing these to donate to our shelter.
  • Talk to your family about fostering an animal from SCCA.

If you are 16 years old or older, consider applying to be a volunteer.

Tots and Tails: Story Time for Preschoolers

Join us every Thursday from 11:00am-noon beginning February 7, 2008 at Second Chance for an hour of animal stories, songs, and crafts.  Each week, preschoolers ages 3-5 will have the opportunity to meet an animal and will learn safe ways to interact with them.

Each session will have a storytime, songs/fingerplays and a craft.  An area will be set up for creative play with puppets, stuffed animals, and animal care items.  Children will also do something to help animals at each session:  make a toy, fill a water bowl, prepare a food treat, fold some blankets.

Every Thursday will be different, so why not make this a regular part of your child's week?  Parent/caretaker attendance is required.  12 Thursdays between Feb. 7 and May 1: $50 or $5/session to cover craft suplies.  (There will be no session on March 20.)

TLC:Teen Leaders for Animals Club

We are starting a teen club at Second Chance!

Teens 13-18 years old will have the opportunity to learn and work through four levels of expertise and responsibility by attending workshops at SCCA and working with our animals.  Members will also work on special Humane Society of the United States projects for animal welfare. This is a great opportunity for teens who love animals, want to make a contribution to their community, and/or are thinking of a career with animals.  Become a charter member of our club!  No fee for membership, however, there is an application process as membership will be limited.  Contact Sherie at sjones@secondchancecenterforanimals.org or call (928)714-2204 for more information.

Pre-K–Primary Programs
